    The above text contains:
Strawman argument/claiming what I said wasn't true without providing any proof/Insults

    Here's another recap for you:
Person 1: Thunderbolt = Mac Only
    You: Bingo
Me: Post to an article showing that it won't be Mac only
You: Claim you were talking metaphorically to save your ass
Myself and Econgeek: Explain to you why what you saved your ass with won't be true
You: Go on a rampage of insults

    Pot, meet kettle.
I'll respond to you one last time, to try to clarify your confusion.

Strawman argument/claiming what I said wasn't true without providing any proof/Insults No. You are confusing these with facts. I've pointed out to you each time you have made something up in my reply.

Person 1: Thunderbolt = Mac Only True. In the same way FW is 'Mac only'. You perhaps don't understand the difference between speaking literally and effectively. Effectively, FW is considered 'Mac only' yet is available to any vendor that wants to implement it. But the lack of interest has resulted in it being considered 'Mac only'. Not literally, but effectively. See the difference?
    You: Bingo True.
Me: Post to an article showing that it won't be Mac only False. You posted an article that said others could use it. Nowhere in your article did it say others would use it. I explained this to you, but again, you missed the point. Firewire isn't literally Mac only either.
You: Claim you were talking metaphorically to save your ass False. I don't think you understand what a metaphor is, because you aren't using it right. I claimed, and the OP later explained, it was meant, in context, effectively Mac only. Seriously, this is highschool english.
Myself and Econgeek: Explain to you why what you saved your ass with won't be trueFalse. Econogeek did well in explaining how the situations differ. You explained nothing.
You: Go on a rampage of insults False. No insults. Just observations. If you made a lot of spelling errors and I pointed them out, that would be an observation, not an insult. You both misunderstood posts and made up claims of statements that did not exist. I pointed that out. If you felt insulted, you are being overly sensitive.

Software will also have to keep up and unless your software becomes massively multithreaded and what you're doing can actually be multi threaded there's no real advantage to multi-core CPUs.

This is already a problem with Quicktime in that it doesn't scale past 2 cores. You'll find half of your computer under utilised for instance when transcoding video in Quicktime. Not if you transcode multiple files simultaneously - which is what I do with multiple instances of Toast 7 and Handbrake..

Plus that will probably be fixed in QuickTime 8 which is likely to come with Leopard.

The cost of litigation would not even remotely approached 100 million. The cost of losing (ie, having a judgement against apple), now that would have probably exceeded 100 million. When a company is not sure about it's position, the best thing is to settle. You don't see IBM settling their Linux suit, do you?. And SCOunix hasn't even paid close to 100 mil in lawyers fees yet and they are fighting a losing battle..

I think you are seriously underestimating how expensive these type of patent battles can be. Check out the following story:

    http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article.php/3402321

Regarding its ongoing legal battles with IBM (Quote, Chart) and Novell over Linux code claims, SCO announced an agreement with its legal firm that would cap its legal costs at $31 million. As part of the deal, SCO's legal firm Boies, Schiller & Flexner could be awarded between 20 and 33 percent of any potential settlement that may arise from SCO's claims.

So SCO obviously expected its legal costs to spiral beyond $31 million to make a special deal with its law firm to cap costs. The fact they are willing to give as much as 33% of any potential winnings with the legal firm indicates that the final tally could easily approach $100 million if not for the cap.

It is quite clear that Apple would have made life very, very expensive and excruciating for Creative's legal team. $100 million in legal costs is not unrealistic considering that you not only had the original suit, but countersuits by Apple involving 4 bonafide patents.

this is definitely a style over functionality....how da heck do you dial a number with clickwheel?

of course, if this is a slider phone like chocolate, then this is an awesome design.

How do you figure this is an awesome design? This is a brainless design! Designing the nano in the first place might have been awesome. But making a nano a phone is hardly a leap of design genius!

And you mentioned chocolate and awesome design in the same sentence!!!

    I. Hate. Greenpeace. I've wasted seconds of my life 'listening' to them and its all rubbish.
    http://www.apple.com/environment/

Exactly. Just a bunch of hippies with their own underlying political agendas. FWIW, Apple is no more or less green than any other PC company... Take that as you will, but considering the majority of their production/manufacturing operations are done in and by many of the same companies that PC makers such as HP, Dell, IBM, etc.. use, it's hard to point the finger at one company.

Did anyone notice Disney introduced their own cell phone service? Normally not much but given Steve's close ties to Disney perhaps they have shared some info? www.disneymobile.com

Some very interesting features, makes me think of things that might be available with a mac phone service.

i'm tired of companies taking our privacy so lightly. makes a consumer feel like a dumb piece of meat. i hope someone files a lawsuit over this. any sneaky tactics like this should be outright banned by the government. maybe once we get some politicians of a younger generation in there who are more aware of these issues they will actually do something to protect the consumer from greedy and arrogant corporations. i hope but i'm not sure i will ever see this dream realized the way government currently lets companies run rampant.

It *is* private now. This information isn't broadcast anywhere but your own personal computer in the form of an encrypted backup file. The information won't go anywhere but with you and your property.

However, if your iphone gets stolen, the GPS log is likely the least private thing you need to worry about. The thief will have access to your entire contact list, browsing history, etc..

I can understand the privacy concerns here. I'm not a criminal so I'm not too worried about what might happen if someone gets my phone and figures out where I've been. The first thing I thought of when I read this is maybe if my phone wasn't needlessly doing this in the background I might get better battery life.

I call up Verizon and tell them I have a problem, on last thursday, I talk to a supervisor and we get the issue worked out. She asked me when I would like my credit applied, as soon as possible or on my next billing cycle. I told her as soon as possible, I had my credit applied to my account saturday.

I know this got a off topic, but switching back to a crap company like Cingular is not in my future, no matter if they call me up and offer me a free iPhone to come back to them.

    Christopher

You got customer service from Verizon? Is this before or after they tacked on the taxes that aren't being collected anymore? Or crippled the Bluetooth on their phones? Or put a terrible GUI on their phones? Or any other number of things that they've done that are anti-consumer?

when ur at ur home you'd be connected to wifi so usage wouldn't be a problem. i don't know why anyone pays for the $15/month plan that's a complete ripoff to begin with.

My wife and I both opted for the 200MB plan because our usage over the previous year never exceeded that amount (and often never got close) even while on vacation and using Maps. Therefore paying twice that, or more, for unlimited usage is/was a waste of $. For two iPhones that saved $360/yr which is substantial for us.

If the Apple service works like DropBox to sync all my music on all my iTunes/iPod devices AND is only active over WiFi, then I will probably make use of the service since it would essentially be the wireless syncing for which many have been asking.

As an on-the-go music stream over cell service it is useless to me.

    I see your point!

No, I mean the lowest repair/return rate of the whole industry, and the highest praise in terms of support and reliability of the whole market...care to take a look around, perhaps?

We all know how public problems with Apple may get...1 PowerBook down is worth 1000 DOA Dells that never make it to the news...or perhaps you think the existence of MacFixIt means all Macs are cracked...right?

I really can't believe some of the posts that have been made here.

To suggest that the people of Africa deserve to be wiped out by aids as they haven't evolved or kept up with the rest of the world is beyond contempt. I want to say something else but I'm just totally lost for words by your comments.

I notice no one has commented on the Pope and the Catholic Church forbidding the use of condoms and the effect that has on spreading infection even further.

Forget about the donation that will be made for every sale. Far more important is the number of people that will be educated on life in third world countries as a result of the promotion. We could do with a lot more companies running similar initiatives.

Its a bit sad that people are more interested in a new nano, or a core duo 2 macbook than they are in all the people that die every second of every day. Deaths that the western world could do something about but chooses not to. I for one am ashamed that we do so little to help so many people that suffer so much.

This is most unfortunate. Now that TB is a reality, it would be far better if Intel just kills USB 3.0 completely as fast as possible. There is absolutely no advantage whatsoever in having USB survive past 2.0 at this point.

Sure there is. Higher speeds and backwards compatibility with older ports.

With 3.0 barely entering the market, there is no value in letting it get a foothold.

It's barely entered the market - on the mac. I'm rocking 6 usb 3 ports over here.

This is most unfortunate. Now that TB is a reality, it would be far better if Intel just kills USB 3.0 completely as fast as possible. There is absolutely no advantage whatsoever in having USB survive past 2.0 at this point.

Sure there is. Higher speeds and backwards compatibility with older ports with no adapters.

It is pathetically obsolete compared to TB.

Compared to devices which nobody has which are not compatible with anything else? Compared to a next gen connector that is on one line of apple only products?

Thunderbolt is sweet, but nobody is using it yet and it is a unique connector. I smell another expensive adapter market coming...

What is with the comments about wanting USB 3.0 on Macs? What a huge waste of time and money

It's not expensive and whose time is it wasting? I mean other than people foaming at the mouth on forums.

I'm NOT in favor of drinking and driving, but I am in favor of freedom. I don't like the idea of ANY government control over things like this. Too many darn laws to begin with.

Between Samsung on the hardware and Google on the software, I can't believe anyone in their right mind actually saying with a straight face that the Samsung phone in question is not stealing from Apple. Get a grip.

The customisation of the Galaxy S has nothing to do with Google at all. This isn't stock Android and none of the Samsung UI elements are a part of the AOSP.

You mean like FW was faster than USB and USB2? And yes, it will work with any USB device. You think that is an incentive for drive vendors to invest in it? Really? They might decide to stick with USB3, since consumers know the brand and it will work with the Macs that have TB.

I guess that's why we've seen so many PC manufacturers announce support for TB already. Right?

I think a reading comprehension class would be good for you. That's 2 or 3 posts you have misread. He did explain how the two situations differ. Obviously they do. There are also some commonalities. I guess it might be a bit much to expect you to see those, given your demonstrated limitations with reading.
Speaking of reading comprehension class, maybe you missed this part:
    "Not only"

You want me to throw some more incentives for you? It's four times faster than USB 3.0, will be even faster later down the road. I'd love to see you do this on your USB 3.0 device: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCz_c_rDAXw

Maybe for your rinky dink Toys R Us peripherals that don't require any real bandwidth USB 3.0 is perfect for you. Go take a look at some of the stuff shown off at NAB.

Uh... who cares? You missed my point.

The "world" isn't going to support ThunderPants as Intel now embraces USB3. You're left with basically only Apple to beat the TB drum.

Hence, TB dies or at best fades away slowly. It will never sweep the land aka "firewire" style.
Who cares? Well Intel does since it's going to be supported natively on their chipset. FireWire wasn't. There's no real USB 3.0 adoption, just a bunch of FUD.
